The Music Box is a subscription box that sends you new music every month.Depending on subscription level, you receive at least one CD and a download.
Subscriptions for The Music Box are affordable even for a music-hungry college student and would make a great Christmas or birthday gift here. The subscriptions start at $3.month for a digital envelope, and go up to $15 for a bundle. I settled on the middle ground with “The Box.” at $12/month. This includes free shipping, two CDs, genre choices, and more.
When writing about the first Music Box that I received, I said I hoped the box owners included something to explain what was in the box. They’re doing that now – hurrah!
My Summer Of No Music
Turns out that I’m not nearly as “into” music as I used to be. In fact, many of these CDs are collecting dust. This is neither the fault of The Music Box nor the eminently talented musicians, but rather my own pre-occupation with other things.
At one point in life I was definitely in love with finding and listening to new music. Now? Not at all.
But it took this subscription box for me to learn that lesson: 6 months of music that I kind of like and might have listened to at a different time in my life.
Now? I turn the radio to NPR in the morning for Mr. Ivan, listen to the radio on the way to and from work, and that’s it. No streaming, no downloading from iTunes, no nothing.
And it’s not just know this intellectually. It’s a deep knowing that ‘the pursuit of new and cool music’ doesn’t matter to me anymore. Kinda how I’m feeling with all subscription boxes these days. And in truth, it makes it harder to write a review when I’m over it (see Bon Recipe, see Our Little Roots, see Golden Tote, see the entire “subscription box” tag on this website.)
And The Music Box?
After that Debbie Downer, you’d think the music was miserable. It’s not. It’s wonderful. The 15-year-old me, the 25-yr-old me, and the 35-year-old me would love this subscription box.
There’s Solomon Jaye
There was a young jazz/folk singer named Kate Cosentino, and a best of complication from Trees No Leaves.
And a download from the alt rock band Blind Moxie
There was a wonderful sampler from Griffin Peterson, too.
The Music Box is Awesome
See? This is a great subscription box.
If you’ve got to buy a gift for a high school or college student, or someone who loves exploring new music – this is definitely something to consider.
