The casual reader of this sporadic and humble blog has probably never heard me mention meditation. Yet meditation and the resulting joy and calm is the invisible infusion that guides my life. So this month, I’m challenging myself to 31 days of meditation and mindfulness – M & M.
And actually meditating, of course.
Or rather, using the month to up my M & M game. It’s not that I don’t already have meditation chops, but rather that I don’t use them, don’t take them out for an exercise, don’t indulge them enough. So this month is as much about exercising those muscles.
Thus far, this blog has mostly consisted of me talking about clothes, cats, and food. Meditation is present with all of those things – no, really.
At the same time, I’m continuing to lower my spending. With an impending trip to Peru to prepare for, and the holiday season soon upon us, I need it. And M & M to keep me focused and on track. To help, I’m following along with the 31 Days of Living Well and Spending Less. I’ll start right out by saying that I will not be following some of the suggestions as they’re better suited for people with families. But I’ll definitely be mindful of minimizing eating out, thrift store runs, and other money frittering ways. And a shout out to my friends in that secret Facebook group, too, who will help keep me on track and understand when I’m running off the rails.
Between updating the blog (nearly) every day for the month of October, the Living Well challenge, and the zillion tasks that need to be done before winter howls into Michigan, I should stay on track.
Not that I know what track I’m on. But that meditating and not spending will certainly help, regardless of the track. Or help me switch tracks. Or, well, it will be good for me, just like mowing the lawn and growing a garden is good for me. So there.
More laughing? Try this…
Just breathe. Sit quietly for 5 or 10 minutes and pay attention to your breathing. Closing your eyes helps, but it’s not necessary. Sitting up straight helps, but again, not necessary. Notice the chatter in your head, and keep breathing. Watch the in and out breath, the rising and falling of your chest and stomach as you breathe. Feel the air move in and out of your body. Just breathe.
Anytime you’re feeling stressed during the upcoming week, sit quietly and just breathe. Can you sit for 5 minutes and do nothing but breathe? Why or why not?
Now go eat some M & M’s because chocolate is good for you, too. And just breathe.
